about

Recording at a brisk pace, Vanarays have now self-released three mesmerizing EP's since 2011, a testament to their nose-to-the-grindstone mentality. Sea Of Tin at once boasts the energy of rookies but the sonic spectrum of veterans, kicking off with the rambling charge of "Edible Sun," sprinkled with distant horns, fuzzy guitar strums and hypnotic, echoed vocals. A real stand-out follows with "Something To Prove," as it easily could've come from a college mix-tape in 1989 with it's snappy pace and post-punk instrumentation. If any track from Sea Of Tin is destined for radio, without a doubt it's this one.

The band cranks things up during "For The Weekend," imagining a vacation at the end of the world, as well as on closing number "See Right Through," a vicious splattering of Bleach-era howls. "An Awful Piece of Time We Call Today" rides along on a mysterious surf-rock vibe and the title track - though instrumental - is immediately recognizable as the band's own. Deep bass grooves, click-clack percussion, heroic trumpet and an ominous tone all create a fantastic soundscape that needs no lyrics to weigh it down.

While expanding their palette but remaining true to their unique sound, Sea Of Tin is definitely the band's masterwork, that is until their next release.
